Assessment Centre Format
The structured interview typically lasts 40-50 minutes and covers:
- General competencies (from the EPSO competency framework)
- Field-related questions specific to data management
- Motivation for working in the EU institutions
General Competency Questions
EPSO uses the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result). Prepare concrete examples from your career for each competency:
Analysis & Problem Solving
"Describe a situation where you had to analyse a large dataset to solve a business problem. What was your approach?"
Focus on: methodology, tools used, how you identified the root cause, and measurable results.
Communicating
"Tell us about a time you had to explain a technical data concept to non-technical stakeholders."
Focus on: adapting your language, using visualisations, and ensuring understanding.
Delivering Quality & Results
"Give an example of a data project where you had to meet tight deadlines while maintaining data quality."
Focus on: prioritisation, quality assurance processes, and trade-off decisions.
Working with Others
"Describe a situation where you collaborated across teams or departments on a data initiative."
Focus on: coordination, conflict resolution, and shared outcomes.
Field-Specific Questions
Data Governance
"How would you design a data governance framework for an EU institution that currently has no formal one?"
Cover: data ownership roles, data quality metrics, metadata management, compliance with EU regulations, and governance bodies.
GDPR Scenarios
"A directorate wants to share employee survey data with an external research institute. What steps would you take?"
Cover: legal basis assessment, data minimisation, DPIA if needed, data sharing agreement, and DPO consultation.
Interoperability
"How would you approach making two legacy systems from different member states exchange citizen data for a cross-border service?"
Cover: EIF layers, semantic mapping, API standards, legal framework alignment, and security considerations.
Preparation Tips
- Prepare 8-10 STAR stories that can flex across different competencies
- Always connect field answers back to EU regulations and frameworks
- Show awareness of the institutional context (Commission, DGs, interinstitutional cooperation)
- Practice aloud — timing and delivery matter as much as content
- Be specific about your role: "I did X" not "We did X"
